Q: What is Sports Therapy?
A: Sports Therapy is an aspect of healthcare specifically concerned with the
prevention of injury and rehabilitation of the patient back to optimum levels
of functional, occupational and sports specific fitness, regardless of age
and ability.
It utilises the principles of sport and exercise sciences incorporating physiological
and pathological processes to prepare the participant for training, competition
and where applicable, work.
Q: What is a Sports Therapist?
A: Sports Therapist is a practitioner who:
-
has the knowledge and ability to provide first aid and attend to injuries in a recreational, training and competitive environment
-
has the knowledge and ability to assess and, where appropriate, refer on for specialist advice and intervention
-
has the knowledge and ability to provide sports massage pre and post activity
-
has the knowledge and ability to implement appropriate rehabilitation programmes
-
has the knowledge to utilise sports and exercise principles to optimise preparation and injury prevention programmes.
Q: What is the difference between a physio and
a Sports Therapist?
A: The main difference is that a Sports Therapist is trained to rehabilitate a patient right through to the patient’s return to sport rather than back to day to day fitness. A Sports Therapist also has expert sport specific knowledge of injuries.
Q: Can I just have a massage?
A: Absolutely, lots of people do exactly this. Some of them have regular massage to help maintain supple, healthy muscles for their sport and others just use it to relax from the stresses of work.
Q: Can I be treated if I am pregnant?
A: Yes, our Therapists are all aware of what treatments are contraindicated during pregnancy. Massage is only advisable after the first trimester.
Q: Do you offer any discounts?
A: We offer a referral scheme which can qualify you for discounted treatments. We also offer discounts for teams and organisations. If you wish to obtain a quote for this then please drop us an email or give us a call.
Q: Are my personal details confidential?
A: Completely. All our Therapists comply to
our strict code of ethics dictated by our governing
body, The Society of Sports Therapists. We
also fulfil our legal obligation to the Data
Protection Act 1998 and are members of the
Information Commissioners Office (ICO).
Q: How well qualified will my therapist
be?
A: All our Sports Therapists are fully insured
BSc(Hons) graduates in Sports Therapy. This
means they have successfully completed a 3
year degree course validated by The Society
of Sports Therapists. The course provides a
graduate with an extensive knowledge of anatomy,
pathophysiology, hands-on treatments and rehabilitation.
Additionally, students must complete a comprehensive
portfolio of practical experience, often with
elite sports teams. Once graduated, all Sports
Therapists are required to maintain continuous
personal development in the form of reflective
practice and short courses. This is something
that Fit For Sport fully embraces.
